My relatives say that they are glad that I'm rich, but that they simply cannot read me.
— Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.
As I once told a co-worker: Writing is harad.
That's because I'm a terrible typist and meant to type "writing is hard."
But why is it hard? Is it because writers are perfectionists? Is it because we have lofty expectations? Is it because we cripple ourselves with the fear of getting lost in our own heads? Or is it because having an original idea that excites us gets lost among the desire to be published?
I can't help you answer any of those questions. What I hope to do, however, is provide prompts and conversation starters that push your boundaries (and perhaps the bounds of good taste). In addition, my goal is for this to be a community that enriches your experience with writing.
Here are the rules:
- Absolutely everything that you share or post must be original work.
- Nothing that gets posted here gets shared without the original author's permission.
- I can't force you to add content warning/trigger warning notices at the beginning of your pieces, but if someone requests one and you don't add it, I will remind you once before removing your piece. If you mock anyone for requesting a warning, you will not be welcome to post your work here again.
- If someone doesn't ask for a critique, don't provide one.
- If someone DOES ask for a critique, be mindful in your feedback. The purpose of feedback is to honor the piece, not to compete.
- If you have promised someone a critique, please be honest about when you can deliver said feedback and how much you can provide. Stay in communication.
- If you're asking for feedback, please be clear as to what type of feedback you'd like, even if it's just "Hey, I wrote this thing, and I need to hear someone say 'good job.'" That's a valid request.
- If you need feedback by a specific date, please communicate that as well.
- No TERFs, racists, or homophobes.
Now, on with the show.
